Long range tank for '08 Hilux D4dD?

Hi Guys

I'm looking at having a long range tank installed on my Hilux. The one I was looking at is the Frontrunner 70L tank. Apparently the filler cap gets connected to the LR tank and then the LR tank gets connected to the main tank. Is there anything to look out for in terms of installation method, fuel guage issues etc. How does the EXCEL tank compare. Or is it much of a muchness? There was a thread the other day where someone mentioned that it took them about 30min to fill the tank(s) due to the pipe being too small or something like that. I would like to avoid any complications in this regard, so any comments from those who have done this will be much appreciated.

i can only provide information related to frontrunner which i had fitted to hilux 5 years ago. i have 145l extra tank and touch wood i have not had one day of trouble with this brand. Regarding the time to refuel i have had situations where loading both tanks takes a while but in my experience it is all about getting the right setting on the petrol pump and not getting the attendant to have it on manual. When set correctly it takes about 10-15 mins to fill both tanks from empty in the region of 240l.

I do however believe that if i was to fit this again i may consider having the filling points seperate.

Frontrunner 65l on 1998 D/C Hilux SFA - Filling time 30 minutes

Exel 42l on Fortuner - Fills with less airlock than before fitment of tank!

As previously said, I know Northern Offroad (manufacturers of Exel) well. They kitted all my equipment on my Fortuner and I'm still smiling.

I fitted the frontrunner tank to my 06 hilux 4.0 petrol and have no hassles at all. It fills from the one filler only (my old 89 hilux had two filler caps) and must say I prefer the one filler as it is easier with less hassles. Filling time is normal with no airlocks or anything experienced. Had it filled to the brim on a few occasions now during extended trips through Moz and Bots. Must say it feels good to travel around 500km's before your fuel needle starts to move downwards!

I guess your setup would be the same as what I am looking at getting and if you don't have any problems with it, that's just the answer I was looking for. Yours is also a gravity feed system, I assume. I think the air lock situation probably occurs more when you have the two tanks seperate and linked by means of a fuel pump rather than with a gravity feed system where you have the two tanks linked by tubing. Anyway, thanks for all your replies sofar.

Remo I also had a look at the Frontrunner and EXCEL tanks not sure what they price now but was around 4k fitted when I wanted to fit one. I eventually had one custom made 160 liters so I can carry 200 liters of diesel now. The cost was 2k fitted (Keep in mind I do not carry my spar wheel under my bakkie anymore it is on the back bumper) the tank is made out of stainlisteel an so far no hassles filling up is a breeze no problem

I have the 72L fuel tank fitted on my Fortuner from 4x4 Megaworld. It works through gravity feed and has only one filler. Filling the OE tank starts after the aux tank is filled, and I have to slow down the pump significantly to avoid air lock. The tank is starting to build up some corrosion on the outside, unfortunately, although it is supposed to be stainless steel. After having experienced the gravity feed tank, I would recommend tanks with pumps, for two reasons:
1. Fitting a pump-based tank is much easier and simpler, no need to modify the main tank
2. With gravity-fed tanks, when you're parked at an upwards angle and the car tanks are half-full, the fuel from the main tank pours back into the aux tank and the guage will indicate an empty tank.

Any experience with the units made by Gerbers, apparently a 85l with little spare wheel drop.

Finally decided to go for the 70L Frontrunner tank. Had it installed last week and I'm pretty happy so far. It fills up without any air lock in no time and there is minimal spare wheel drop. One just needs to get used to the extra weight of a full tank at the rear of the vehicle, it becomes a bit bouncy. But after 300 km's or so, when the weight is reduced, its ok. I guess a suspension mod is next on the list
